Put Your Dreams to the Test – ARE YOU COMPELLED?
This is post we will explore question #4 from John Maxwell’s book “Put Your Dream to the Test”
The Passion Question: Does MY DREAM Compel me to Follow It?
“If you are working on something that you really care about, you don’t have to be pushed. The vision pulls you.” Steve Jobs
Is your vision pulling you? Or is someone pushing you? If someone is pushing you, you might want to re-evaluate if you should be pursuing that particular dream or goal.
John Maxwell uses an analogy of the game where you pull the level and your romance level is measured by how long and hard you can squeeze the handle when you put your quarter in. If your passion for your dream were measured this way, would you be able to make the meter go all the way to the top? Or just half way? Or would it even go 1/4 of the way? How much passion you have for something will determine how much you are compelled to reach your dream/goal and determine the success of how well you achieve it if at all.
Passion provides the energy that makes you compelled to reach your dream. Without passion, you probably won’t get very far in reaching your dream.
However, I do believe that if you have a dream and it’s YOUR DREAM, you will have passion for it. In Maxwell’s book, he paraphrases Will Hobbs, “passion makes possible waking up in the morning, whoever you are, wherever you are, however old or young, and bounding out of bed because there’s something out there that you love to do, that you believe in, that you’re good at – something that’s bigger than you are, and you can hardly wait to get at it again today.”
What does passion do for you? Passion will pull you up empowering you to overcome adversity. (paraphrased from John Maxwell)
Have you had a dream to accomplish something and someone or someone’s try to prevent you from going in that direction? Telling you that you will never achieve your dream, that it’s not possible, you’ll never get there?
When you have passion for your dream, you won’t care what adversity comes at you. You are compelled to move forward regardless of what anyone else says or does. You are willing to push through at any personal cost to yourself!
My dream is to see others reach higher potential than they ever thought possible. I want to see people reach their impossible and realize it is possible!!!
One of my favorite shows on TV is Restaurant Impossible. I love the name of the show, the host of the show Robert Irvine. They take a failing restaurant and in 2 days and $10,000 dollars, the do a make over of the restaurant. During this 2 day period, Robert first has to learn what is causing the restaurant to fail? This is usually due to poor management, poor kitchen staff, untrained wait staff, etc. During the course of the first day, he coaches the owners, managers, staff and trains them to think differently, realize where the weakness is and how they can overcome it! In the middle of all that, he’s usually writing a new menu (if the food is horrible), teaching the cooks in the kitchen to cook, training wait staff good customer service and the owners how to manage their business. I’m always amazed at how much Robert is able to accomplish in 2 days. OH yeah, and while all that is going on he has designers come in and remodel the restaurant. This usually takes the shape of replacing flooring, tables, booths, painting walls, replacing light fixtures and decor. The works. And the designers only have $10,000 to spend. Sometimes if the kitchen equipment is dated or not working properly, Robert takes some of the budget from the design team. This makes their job even more challenging. Robert comes into what seems impossible and turns it into possible!
This is what I have a passion for! Making the impossible possible!!! I still can’t grow wings and fly (darn it), but I can take what I can do and help others see they are more than they think and help them realize their dreams!
Robert’s passion is to see restaurants thriving and to help those who are struggling. He exudes this passion through the TV show.
Maxwell quotes Poet William Arthur Ward keys to success is to:
Believe while others are doubting.
Plan while others are playing.
Study while others are sleeping.
Decide while others are delaying.
Prepare while others are daydreaming.
Begin while others are procrastinating.
Work while others are wishing.
Save while others are wasting.
Listen while others are talking.
Smile while others are frowning.
Commend while others are criticizing.
Persist while others are quitting.
What will allow you to accomplish all from above? PASSION!!!
What compels you to take initiative? PASSION!!! In order to reach any dream or goal, you must have initiative to get it started. Without initiative, you’re not going very far.
Albert Schweitzer wrote “Success is not the key to happiness. Happiness is the key to success. If you love what you are doing, you will be successful.”
How many people do you think are living their dreams? Are pursuing their passions? Through the IPEC training, I learned 85% of the people live in fear and anger. This tells me that only 15% of the people are happier which means only a small percentage of our population is living their dreams and being successful in this game we call life.
Who knows or are those people who live for the weekend? Hate Mondays? Just trying to hang in there until retirement? These people are not following their passion, their dreams, their goals. They’ve given up and given in.
DON’T BE THAT PERSON!!! TAKE A STAND TODAY AND DECLARE THAT YOU WILL FOLLOW YOUR PASSION, YOUR DREAMS AND GOALS!!!
John Maxwell states, “Dreams come true when gifts are set on fire with passion. The best career advice you will ever receive is to discover your passion and follow it.”
How passionate are you for the life you are currently in? How passionate are you for your dream? Do you live, breathe, dream, go to sleep and wake-up thinking about your dream?
John Maxwell has a Passion Scale in his book:
10. My passion is so hot that it sets other people on fire.
9. I cannot imagine my life without my dream.
8. I willingly sacrifice other important things for it.
7. I am fired up by it and often preoccupied with it.
6. I enjoy it as one of many interests.
5. I can take it or leave it.
4. I prefer not to think about it.
3. I go out of my way to avoid it.
2. I’ve put it on my list of least favorite things.
1. I would rather have a root canal without anesthesia.
Where do you fall on the passion scale? Are you fired up or cold as ice?
Does your passion compel you and push you forward out of your comfort zone? People do not reach their dreams by being average and mundane. You have to leave your comfort zone in order to reach higher, do more, be more.
I said in an earlier post that most people who reach their dreams start out as an ordinary person living an ordinary life until they find their dream. In order to reach your dream you must be willing to stand out and be extraordinary and do extraordinary things. Are you willing to stand out and not worry what others think of you and follow your passion?
From John Maxwell’s book:
CAN YOU ANSWER YES TO THE PASSION QUESTION:
DOES MY DREAM COMPEL ME TO FOLLOW IT?
If you lack passion for the pursuit of your dream, you must resolve the issue to be successful in that area of your life:
Do you lack passion because you do no own your dream?
Do you lack passion because you do not see it clearly enough?
Do you lack passion because your dream doesn’t match your talents and skills?
Does your natural temperament disguise your passion?
Is your passion stifled by a fear of being different?
Has your passion been diminished as you have gotten older?
Every person is capable of discovering and harnessing the power of passion – no matter what age, stage of life or temperament. It’s never too early or too late to dream.
